Pink Floyd Heads to Spotify

Pink Floyd, one of the classic rock holdouts to the platform, will come to Spotify if listeners stream the song "Wish You Were Here" 1 million times.

The group announced the initiative via its Twitter feed:

Help stream Wish You Were Here 1 million times to unlock Pink Floyd's catalogue on @Spotify: http://t.co/PpNjKAm3AX #floydcountdown— Pink Floyd (@pinkfloyd) June 13, 2013

The music service announced the program on Friday. Pink Floyd's catalog is owned by EMI Records. Spotify inked a deal with EMI in 2011, but Pink Floyd's catalog -- including Dark Side of the Moon, which sold 50 million copies worldwide -- was not included in that deal.

The band has been a reluctant convert to the digital music age. In 2010, it fought EMI's ability to sell individual tracks -- rather than full albums -- on online services like iTunes. However, the band lost that battle. The move comes after Metallica, a vocal critic of digitized music, joined Spotify in 2012. AC/DC joined iTunes around the same time, but has held off on Spotify. Other notable Spotify holdouts include the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
