Pizza Hut in Hong Kong just made movie nights much more entertaining with a pizza box that helps turn your phone into a movie projector.
As a marketing stunt, the pizza chain is delivering special boxes to customers that morph into movie projectors, according to designboom.
The design of the pizza box movie projector is quite ingenious: It comes with a specially-designed pizza table -- the white little contraption that holds your pizza in place -- with a detachable projector lens at the top, which fits into a perforated hole at the front of the box. A QR code on the side of the box brings you to a webpage with four pizza-themed movies for your viewing pleasure. Once you've picked a film of your choice, you prop up your phone with the pizza table. And voila, you have cinema!
Don't expect anything resembling high definition, though. The image quality is, to put it delicately, charmingly old school, and unless you have a Bluetooth speaker, the audio quality will be poor since your phone is inside a pizza box.
You won't be able to stream from your Netflix account either, since the image on your phone needs to be mirrored in order to project properly. Also, your phone will probably smell of pizza after, which is either great or terrible.
These are all minor complaints though, because how cool is this thing? I don't care that it's compromised: It's too cool to matter.
As of now, the pizza box projector is sadly only available in Hong Kong with no word on a release in other markets. Hopefully it makes its way to the U.S. -- it might even make me consider eating a Pizza Hut pizza.
