Plaxo Launching Next Gen Social Network, May Deflate Facebook Hype

I'm pretty sure the details are embargoed till then, but as Scoble has already blogged today, Plaxo plans to release a social network aggregator on Monday. The key feature: openness, adding social networking contacts to the email and IM contacts users already store there. Frankly, I thought they'd do that with their last release, and was surprised to see social networks not included with the other additions.

With the new Plaxo, you can aggregate feeds and control who sees what information. You own your data, you can export it elsewhere and you're in control, not the platform provider (Facebook, by contrast, uses a locked-down form of so-called openness). The new network comes with its own highly unoriginal name that you'll hear on Monday (update: ok, others have gone ahead and revelaed the name is Pulse, just like Facebook Pulse and Xanga Pulse before it).
