PlayStation TV, the pocket-sized Sony set-top box that brings older and handheld games to the television, will be released in stores in the United States on Oct. 14.

The PlayStation TV plays handheld games from the PlayStation Vita, either from the cartridge or download, as well as older games from the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation Portable handheld. It also works with streaming services like PlayStation Now to stream PlayStation 3 games.

The PlayStation TV can also serve as way to remotely play games from a PlayStation 4 on a different television, similar to how the PlayStation Vita currently works. The set-top box was originally announced and released in Japan in 2013, and Sony announced at E3 that it would come North America and Europe due to a high level of consumer interest.

The PlayStation TV costs $100 on its own, or $140 with a DualShock 3 controller from the PlayStation 3, an 8 gig proprietary memory card and a copy of the The Lego Movie Videogame.

Not mentioned in the PlayStation blog are additional media capabilities of PlayStation TV, which would allow it to also compete against devices like the Apple TV or Roku, with the added benefit of games.
