Aside from range anxiety, remembering to plug your car in might be the worst part of EV ownership. Thankfully, that might soon be a concern of the past for the Model S thanks to Plugless, an aftermarket wireless EV charger company.
Plugless is now taking $244 refundable deposits for its wireless Model S charging system, which it plans to produce in Spring 2016. If you put a deposit down now, it locks you into a price of $2,440, which the deposit is applied to at time of full purchase. However, if you don't put down a deposit now, you won't be guaranteed the $2,440 price. A Plugless representative told Mashable the "MSRP will be more than that."
In order to charge your Tesla with Plugless, Simply park your Model S over the Plugless charger and it receives a 7.2 kilo-Watt charge, which is good for around 20 miles of range per hour of charging, according to its website. Plus, installing Plugless doesn't change your ability to use a hardwired charger.
Additionally, the Plugless charger plugs into any 50Amp circuit and only requires professional installation if you intend to put your Plugless charger outside. If you do, it's been rated to withstand temperatures 0° to 122° Fahrenheit.
With all that great news, you had to know there would be at least a few downsides. Currently, Plugless' Tesla Model S charger is only compatible with rear-wheel drive Model S cars -- all-wheel drive model compatibility is in the works. Sadly, Tesla Roadster, Model X and Model 3 are not compatible with the Plugless charger.
