'Pokemon' Makes its First Leap Into 3D

The megapopular Pokemon franchise will finally be coming to the 3DS handheld this fall, according to an announcement from Nintendo Tuesday morning.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are the first 3D entrants into the long-running gaming franchise and will be released in North America, Europe and Japan sometime in October, according to a livestreamed announcement by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

The franchise will introduce all new creatures to the Pokemon universe; the trailer showed off the three new Pokemon players can start the game with: Fennekin, Froakie and Chespin. The trailer also shows off some of the 3D gameplay from X and Y, which will be the first time a handheld Pokemon game will not just feature top-down gameplay.

"We brought Pokemon into an entirely new dimension and we're incredibly excited to bring Pokemon X and Pokemon Y to fans," said Junichi Masuda, video game director at GAME FREAK inc. "The stunning visuals, a completely redesigned environment, game scenario, music, and communication features will bring smiles to the faces of video game players around the world."

Pokemon games have traditionally helped sell Nintendo's handheld consoles. The franchise has sold more than 200 million games and is the second biggest selling video game franchise ever, only behind Nintendo's Mario. The leap to the 3DS will ensure an uptick in sales for the system.
