Facebook have just launched a feature called "Election 2006", which allows you to search for office candidates for the Senate, House, and Governorship. The site now has 1,600 profile pages for candidates running for House and Senate seats, as well as state governorships in the election this November. The idea is that Facebook members can connect directly with politicians on a face-to-face level, and maybe even correct them on their "series of tubes" analogies.

The new section appears under the "election" tab on your Edit Profile page, and you can also add your support to any politician. What's more, the new section lets you form groups around campaign issues - some of the more notable groups include "Legalize All Drugs”"and "Bye Bye Electoral College".

The move is bound to improve Facebook's image a great deal, since the site is getting young people involved in politics again. It also counteracts profit-driven moves like the recent Facebook credit cards. Two thumbs up.
