Apple Guideline Changes Give $140,000 Kickstarter the Green Light

POP charger, a $140,000 Kickstarter project to create a universal charger for phones -- including Apple devices -- was killed last week due to its incompatibility with Apple's strict guidelines for Lightning accessories.

In an unexpected turn of events, Apple has revised its Lightning guidelines, which means the POP project once again has the green light.

The Kickstarter campaign for POP raised nearly $140,000 -- more than double its goal -- before the project was shut down. Now, one of the project's founders, Jamie Siminoff, claims the project will continue to go as planned.

"As you know on Thursday we sent you an update that because of Apple’s rules around Lightning we would be canceling POP. The story got A LOT of news and reactions, way more than we could have ever imagined. In fact it became such big news that 24 hours after we posted Apple changed their guidelines for Lightning .... Based on Apple’s change we can make POP the way we had promised and the project is back on. We will not be processing refunds and are going full speed ahead to produce and deliver the product to you ASAP," Siminoff wrote in an email to project backers.

It's unclear whether Apple decided to change its Lightning accessory guidelines because of the publicity surrounding this Kickstarter campaign, or perhaps the POP project simply got a lucky break. In any case, the project's 1000+ backers will surely be happy with the outcome.
