popSLATE Case Gives iPhone 5 a Second E-Ink Screen

Sometimes one screen is just not enough, so popSLATE gives you another 4-inch display on the back of your iPhone 5. It's a case with an E-Ink screen on the back that's always on, displaying images and data while using minimal power from your iPhone 5.

Like all E-Ink screens, it's easy to read in direct sunlight like the display on the Amazon Kindle, giving you a mini e-reader on the back of your iPhone. A slight downside is the case's dimensions and weight, with a .54-inch thickness that nearly doubles the iPhone's svelte .30-inch profile, and adds nearly 2.64 ounces (75g) to the iPhone 5's 3.95-ounce weight.

The makers of PopSLATE plan to initially roll it out with Instagram capability, interacting with that photo-sharing app and displaying its pictures on the E-Ink screen, where you can either view individual pics or create a slideshow. It's all controlled by a PopSLATE app on the iPhone, which will also be able to plug into additional photo-sharing platforms. Beyond that, there will be an API that will allow developers to create apps specifically for the screen.

As you can see in the video above, it's not a touchscreen, but works with the iPhone's accelerometer, reacting to a tap on the screen to allow you to change images. And the company says that screen is "nearly indestructible" (no word about scratches, though), made of super-hard plastic. So far, the case's E-Ink screen is black-and-white, but PopSLATE developers say they "hope to add color screens in early 2014."
