Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met in the Belarussian capital of Minsk on Wednesday to talk peace, although the day was not without its awkward moments.

The men made another attempt to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine that has gripped the country for months. The Minsk talks got underway in a room full of sideways glances, forced smiles and tense handshakes, as French, German and Belarussian leaders looked on.
