Google has added several security features to Postini, the enterprise email company it acquired for $625 million last year. The new services are available as part of Google Apps, and essentially consist of three separate plans offering enhanced security based on the amount you pay per user per year (details here).

The idea here is that corporate customers can outsource their e-mail security to Google/Postini without new hardware or software, as the new features will run on top of existing corporate email systems such as Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes.

If reading about enterprise e-mail security isn’t exciting enough for you, Google has put together a video with a customer from an accounting firm talking about how they’re using Google’s Message Security products:

While not the sexiest of Google products, the release does highlight Google’s increasing presence in the enterprise. The company is now claiming more than 500,000 customers for Google Apps, and, counter to the upfront licensing costs associated with most desktop software, Google is building a recurring revenue stream based on subscription pricing for their web-based business applications.
