The impending return of The Powerpuff Girls has sparked some major excitement among fans of the tiny cartoon crimefighters, but the news of the show's return came as a bit of a gut punch to the original cast.
Following Monday's announcement of the new actors set to take over voicing the roles of animated trio Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, Catherine Cavadini, Tara Strong and Elizabeth Daily all took to Twitter to express their sadness over being passed over for the roles they helped create.

"I don't remember ordering a stab in the heart today," tweeted Strong, who voiced Bubbles and claims the original cast was "never asked" to return.

Regardless of how it seems, though, news of the casting was not a total surprise to the group.
Back in February, Strong had confirmed she, Cavadini and Daily (who was also the voice of Tommy Pickles on The Rugrats) would not be returning for the reboot, set to air on Cartoon Network in 2016.
2 all the sweet fans who keep asking @RealEGDaily @CatCavadini & I R officially NOT returning 4 #PowerpuffGirls we r sad but wish them well— tara strong (@tarastrong) February 26, 2015
Cavadini said the decision was based on a "creative choice" by Cartoon Network.
@DonovanW1996 @tarastrong @RealEGDaily No, it's not contractual. It is a creative choice on their part.— Catherine Cavadini (@CatCavadini) March 7, 2015
Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, who is not involved with the reboot as he has a contract with Disney, has also seemingly thrown his support behind the OG cast, tweeting a picture of Cavadini, Daily and Strong in action.

The new cast of The Powerpuff Girls includes The Fosters star Amanda Leighton (Blossom), newcomer Kristen Li (Bubbles), and Natalie Palamides (Buttercup).
Tom Kenny, who voiced the Narrator/Mayor in the original series, will reprise his role.
