Pownce Releases Public API

Staying true to their announcement back in July, the Pownce team released a public API, which means that developers will now be able to create third party plugins and applications for Pownce.

When Pownce initially appeared, we were quite pleased with its unique combination of microblogging and instant messaging. We've had two major complaints: lack of SMS gateway (less important), and lack of public API - both of which their biggest competitor, Twitter, has already had.

Now, one of these is remedied, and I'm personally quite excited to see how much interest will Pownce API generate (some of it is already visible on the Pownce API Google Group). I expect to see at least ten cool Pownce applications in the next ten days (one of these is bound to be some combination of Pownce and Google Maps); I'll report back after this period so we can all see if I was too optimistic.
