NBC's new show The Cape is getting its premiere today, but you can only watch it if you have an iPad. The sneak peek was made possible via a relationship with DC Comics, which will offer viewers the chance to view the one-hour pilot episode from January 5 to 8 via DC's free iPad app. The show's television premiere is set for January 9. Though NBC is partnering with DC, the show isn't based on a DC Comics character, but is instead inspired by it.
The show features David Lyons as Vince Faraday, a cop who is unjustly accused of a crime and becomes a secret crime fighter.
Adam Stotsky, president of marketing for NBC Entertainment, says the combination of a fanboy property and a cutting edge tech platform is an effective way to reach the target audience. "We thought engaging with DC Comics and the iPad would be a perfect way to create some pre-premiere buzz with fans who have the capacity to be ambassadors." NBC has experimented with other pre-premiere venues before. In 2009, the network premiered the show Community on Facebook. To see that premiere you had to become a fan first.
