For many, whether the system is a good or bad idea can only be determined by seeing it in action. Although a number of Twitter application developers have been implementing the RT APIs into their clients (or are developing future versions of their clients to support the feature), we still need a user with the functionality turned on to see how it will look.

John Gruber's Twitter account apparently has the new RT feature enabled. Check out the screenshots from my iPhone:

The shot on the left is of the regular mobile Twitter page on my iPhone. The shot on the right is from the iPhone application, Birdfeed, which has implemented the new RT API calls.

Other Twitter clients with the RT enabled in development versions also show off the new RT timeline view. As you can see, the original author shows up in the user's timeline, making it clear that they were the author of the tweet -- as well as a visual indicator using the @username: syntax.

Although Twitter would neither confirm nor deny turning the feature on for his account, it's hard to come to any other conclusion. This would also align with the strategy of rolling out the feature to a few users at first before turning the function on systemwide.

As of right now, if your Twitter client does not support the RT APIs, retweets will not show up when viewing a user's timeline (if they have the new RT feature enabled). They do show up on the Twitter.com page, presumably because the RT function hasn't gone site-wide.

For developers of Twitter clients, you probably want to go ahead and start implementing the new API calls into your development builds.
