In what may be the first time a potential presidential candidate announced his bid by turtleneck, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul sent out a tweet on Tuesday that appeared to do just that.
His wink to the 2016 presidential race was boldly emblazoned next to a photo of a black turtleneck posted to his official Twitter account. He also gave a hat-tip to the, ahem, memorable styles of former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum in the 2012 campaign.
Of course, everyone has to be themselves, and I have my own style. I think this will be a popular item this year pic.twitter.com/ejuPwOAb6E— Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) December 23, 2014
We all know having a fashion forward campaign is important to success, as @RickSantorum showed us in 2012 #Festivus pic.twitter.com/qAeGIp2wpo— Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) December 23, 2014
Paul's nod to the upcoming race doesn't come as a surprise, despite the unconventional approach. He has been positioning himself for the role for quite some time, and is expected to make an official announcement in the spring.
Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has also publicly supported Paul. In an interview with CNN earlier this month, McConnell said he is "a big fan of his."
The tweet comes a week after an ambiguous Facebook post by fellow Republican Jeb Bush announcing his intention to "actively explore the possibility of running for President of the United States."
Side note: in the midst of his nod to 2016, Sen. Paul was also tweeting about airing his grievances as part of Seinfeld's mock-holiday Festivus.
I will be back later with some grievances about the media, the fed, and a few others. Remember, air your grievances today for #Festivus— Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) December 23, 2014
Paul is no stranger to the campaign trail, actively supporting his father, former U.S. congressman Ron Paul in 2012. He is also no stranger to the turtleneck, which appears to be a staple of his wardrobe.

Bonus: If Paul the younger does decide to run for the highest office in the land, we have lots more turtlenecks to look forward to.
