Born on May 4, 1852, Alice Pleasance Liddell was the fourth child of Henry and Lorina Liddell, who had six more children after her. The family moved to Oxford in 1856, where they met Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. He befriended the family, and photographed the daughters on numerous occasions. On July 4, 1862, Dodgson took Lorina, Edith and Alice on a boat trip from Oxford to Godstow. To entertain the girls, Dodgson made up a fantastical story with a young protagonist named Alice. The girls loved the story, and Alice begged him to write it down. He soon penned a manuscript for Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, which he later expanded, revised, and in November 1865 published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alice grew up to marry wealthy cricketer Reginald Hargreaves at the age of 28, and was active in high society for much of her life. She had three sons, two of whom were killed in action in World War I. In 1932, she passed away at the age of 80.
