First red smog alert is issued in Beijing

Beijing has issued its first-ever red alert for smog. Authorities have forecast more than three consecutive days of severe smog. Schools were urged to close and there are restrictions on factories and traffic. The red alert is the most serious warning on a four-tier system adopted a little over two years ago.
