Reddit, Airbnb and Imgur were down Monday afternoon, thanks to an issue with Amazon Web Services.
Downtime is a a fairly rare occurrence for the Reddit, which receives some 35 million visitors per month.
Erik Martin, general manager at Reddit confirmed to Mashable that the downtime is "apparently due to an Amazon issue." Reddit appears to have gone down shortly before 2 p.m. EST, prompting some chatter on Twitter:
With reddit down I have no choice but to be productive.— Matt Mira (@MattMira) October 22, 2012
Reddit is down. In a related story, other web sites have no new content.— Mike Sampson (@mjsamps) October 22, 2012
Reddit also added its own update:
The site is down right now.It appears to be a network-related issue. We are investigating.— reddit status (@redditstatus) October 22, 2012
This isn't the first time Amazon outages have brought down portions of the social web. In June, storms knocked down portions of Amazon's EC2 network, taking Instagram along with it.
Update: Amazon Web Services' current status shows a "degraded" performance for one of its centers in Northern Virginia, the most common zone for U.S.-based customers. Flipboard also appears to be down:
Our service is currently down. It should be restored to normal soon. Thank you for your patience.— Flipboard (@Flipboard) October 22, 2012
