Reddit is currently under a malicious DDoS attack, according to the site's official Reddit status account on Twitter.
The attack seems to have started early Friday, coinciding with the breaking story about the manhunt for the Boston marathon bombing suspects.
We are working on recovering from what appears to be a DDoS.— reddit status (@redditstatus) April 19, 2013
We've mitigated part of the DDoS at this time. However, certain site functions are disabled.— reddit status (@redditstatus) April 19, 2013
A source of the attack has not been confirmed, however, a Reddit admin says the attack is performed by "someone with a lot of time and bandwidth on their hands," which would indicate that it's a serious, large-scale attack. Posting what seems to be a graph of Reddit's server load, he also said he hasn't seen an attack "at this scale" before.
Right now, most of Reddit's functions seem to work fine, but the site still displays a message saying "Site availability is being impacted by a malicious DDoS attack. Please stay tuned."
We will update this story as we find out more about the attack.
