Reese Witherspoon portrays a broken-down hiker with no hope in the upcoming biopic Wild.

The film, from Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée, puts Witherspoon in the shoes of Cheryl Strayed, a woman whose failed marriage, foolhardy antics and mother's death spark a fire in her to hike hundreds of miles along the Pacific Crest Trail.

The solo journey toward healing, which unfurls in theaters on Dec. 5, is based on Strayed's memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Witherspoon, who won Best Actress at the 2006 Oscars for playing June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, kept an photo diary while filming Wild. It captures a different look for Witherspoon, starkly contrasting her ditzy Elle Woods role in 2001's Legally Blonde.

Here she is hanging out with Strayed on set.
