René Angélil, who was married to Céline Dion for 22 years, died Thursday at the age of 73.

"Rene Angelil passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer," according to Dion's website. "The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time."

Angélil met Dion in 1980, when he became her manager. At the time, he was 38 and she was 12. Their romantic relationship began seven years later when Dion was 19, and they were married in 1994.

The couple had three children together: René-Charles, 14, and twins Nelson and Eddy, 5. Angélil also had three adult children from a previous relationship with singer Anne Renée: Anne Marie, Patrick and Jean-Pierre.

"But René really gave me a gift," Dion told USA Today last year. "All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I've got this. For now. When it hits me, it's going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we're fine. I'll take care of our kids. You'll watch us from another spot."
