More than half of Republican voters surveyed think President Obama is a Muslim, according to a new survey by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling.

According to the survey, 54% of the 572 Republican primary voters surveyed said they believed that President Obama was a Muslim, 32% said they were not sure and 14% said that they believed Obama was a Christian.

President Obama is a Christian who has frequently spoken publicly about his Christian faith. But since his 2008 campaign, his religion has been the subject of questions from some on the right, including some critics who say -- incorrectly -- that President Obama is a Muslim.

Though Obama isn’t in the 2016 race, his religion has already been a topic this campaign cycle.

In August, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who is running for the Republican nomination, told donors in Dana Point, California that he didn’t know whether or not President Obama was a Christian. Walker said he didn’t “presume to know someone’s beliefs about whether they follow Christ or not unless I’ve actually talked with him.”
