RIM Considers Cutting Company in Two

As BlackBerry maker RIM's troubles continue to mount, the company is mulling breaking off its handset unit and selling to Facebook, Amazon or anyone who will have it, according to a report in the Sunday Times. RIM reps could not confirm or deny the report. The company hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital to explore strategic options last month.

RIM's last quarterly report -- for its fiscal 2012 fourth quarter -- was a debacle, with a 19% drop in revenues and its first loss in seven years, so the industry will be watching its quarterly report this Thursday very closely.

Facebook Adds Mobile 'Find Friends Nearby' Feature

In another addition to its array of mobile services, Facebook has quietly added a feature called Find Friends Nearby that lets you find friends or potential friends nearby.

The feature, first reported by TechCrunch, is available via the URL http://fb.com/ffn can also be accessed through Facebook's mobile apps.

The introduction comes after Facebook bought Glancee, an ambient location-based service that lets you find hidden connections around you. A month before that, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in an effort to bolster its mobile offerings. Facebook also bought location-based services firm Gowalla in December 2011.

Flipboard Adds 'New York Times' Content

New York Times content is coming to Flipboard, but only to subscribers to the publication. The content will be accessible starting Thursday as part of The Times's "NYT Everywhere" strategy to get its content onto as many third-party apps as possible. The announcement is the latest in a line for Flipboard, which recently introduced an Android app and integrated Google+ and YouTube.
