Roli's Seaboard GRAND Is New Take on the Piano

Technology has always had a profound impact on music -- think of how the electric guitar changed it -- and a new, innovative keyboard could be the next step.

It's called the Seaboard GRAND and it looks similar to a conventional keyboard. But its keys are soft, pressure-sensitive, flexible, and able to track your every gesture. Thanks to them, the musician can manipulate the sounds using effects and fine-tuning pitch, volume, and timbre while playing it.

Everything can be can be controlled by the musician's fingers as he plays it. The Seaboard GRAND's 3D surface lets the player even simulate guitar sounds or string and horn swells. These effects have been available to musicians with dedicated software for a while, but now they could be added in real time.

The Seabord GRAND is the latest invention of UK startup Roli, and it will be launched and demoed at SXSW on Thursday, March 14.
