A meteorite has disintegrated over Bucharest, the capital of Romania, early Wednesday, blazing through the sky and briefly lighting up the city in the wee hours of the morning.

The event, which occurred at approximately 3:05:57 a.m. local time, was caught on several security cameras throughout the city, such as the rooftop cam from surveillance company NXDATA that took the footage below.

Another fixed camera shows the light show as seen from the Otopeni airport in Bucharest.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

According to the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), the event was caused by a meteoroid entering the Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of 31 - 43 miles, over the area between Bucharest and Vrancea.

It's not certain if this meteoroid -- a small rocky or metallic body moving through space -- has actually become a meteorite, i.e. if any piece of it survived atmospheric entry and hit the ground. It most likely burned in the atmosphere and did not cause any damage, ROSA claims.
