Photo sharing service Roxio is launching a new slide show creation tool that operates as a Web-based option for making more professional-looking products. With animations, captions, soundtracks and transitions, Roxio's new service, Roxio Online, functions as a Web-based competitor to desktop offerings like iMovie.
There are a number of services like Photobucket and Slide that have already cornered the Web-based market for enhanced and shareable slide shows, but Roxio is really pushing for a more mature demographic, with the promotion of "less glittery" special effects and more extensive privacy settings for its sharing options. Roxio is also highlighting its offline sharing capabilities for things like DVD and direct television viewing options through cable-integrated video-on-demand, which tend to have a family-focused appeal.
That's not to say that Roxio is neglecting its online sharing capabilities. There will also be a free Web page offered, with channels that can be dedicated to albums categorized by events or occasions and the option to add a PhotoShow channel to their MSN, Yahoo or Google pages, as well as their iTunes Podcast library. The slide shows will also be embeddable.
When it comes to Web-based services for creating sharable slide shows, we're seeing new services emerge, such as Roxio's latest option and a recent mobile spin-off from fliptrack, called Moblyng. We're also seeing a great deal of collaboration coming into play with family-oriented media sites like Kaltura and Scrapblog better leveraging the Web's media sharing and publishing capabilities.
