LONDON -- There was a lot of excitement outside a central London hospital Saturday after news was announced that Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby girl.

Crowds had gathered along with hundreds of journalists near St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, with some royal fans in situ for weeks ahead of the big day.

The eagerly anticipated royal baby was born at 8:34 a.m. BST (3:34 a.m. ET) after the Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to hospital at 6 a.m. The announcement was made at 11 a.m. by Kensington Palace. The public was told about the birth after the Queen and other members of the royal family were informed.

Die-hard royal fans, many sporting union jack attire and carrying flags and signs, were thrilled with the news.
