Ruby Rose has become a global breakout star after her role as Stella in Netflix's Orange is the New Black, but she also has a powerful message to share about gender.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Rose describes how a waiter once asked her father if she was a "beautiful girl" or a "handsome boy." As a child, she felt more like a boy, she said, and even put money away in a jar from the age of five to save for gender realignment surgery.

As an adult, she came to recognise her gender fluidity and find comfort in her androgynous identity. "It wasn't until much later in life that I realised I could kind of do both and be androgynous and not have to necessarily be womanly," she said.
