One scampish emu has become a running gag in Townsend, Delaware — literally.

The emu, an escaped pet whose owner has yet to come forward, is currently on the loose in the small Delaware town, and has managed to evade any sort of capture thus far. The emu is estimated to have been on the loose for several months now.

Police were alerted that the emu appeared on the grounds of the Spring Meadow Early Childhood Center on Monday, and the school, along with nearby Old State Elementary School, went on "soft lockdown."

Local Drew Hurst told NBC10 that he couldn't believe it when his grandson told him about the school day. “'You weren’t allowed to go play in school because a giant emu was running around in your playground and it was being chased by police?' And he said 'Uh-huh.'"

Duh. What's so hard to understand?

Unfortunately, those in charge of capturing the emu were unsuccessful in their attempts.

“I am getting frustrated,” Dan Stonebraker, one of the emu wranglers, told NBC. “Yesterday we were out there for a few hours, and we got closer than ever. We had our hands on it, physically, twice.”
