Russian Meteor Vapor Trail as Seen From Space

NASA Goddard published a photo of the vapor trail from the meteor that crashed into Russia this morning.

The SEVIRI instrument, which is on board the Meteosat-10 geostationary satellite, captured the above image from orbit today. The meteorite made its dramatic landing near Chelyabinsk, Russia on Feb. 15. The meteor was the largest in a century, and its explosion rivaled that of a nuclear blast, according to Nature.

The meteor comes just hours before a 150-foot-wide asteroid is set to buzz by Earth, coming just 17,200 miles from our planet. However, NASA scientists have ruled out the possibility that asteroid 2012 DA14 is related to the Russian meteorite.
