Most travel-themed Instagram accounts are meant to inspire wanderlust. This one just bums us out.

Sadtopographies on Instagram is a sad collection of the world's most depressing location names. In just a few swipes, visit Disappointment Island in New Zealand or head over to Alone, Italy.

Damien Rudd is the virtual explorer behind @sadtopographies. He tells Mashable via email that he's always had a vague interest in toponymy, the study of place names. And though he acknowledges that these unusual names might seem a little funny today, the stories behind the names often tell a sadder story.

It's hard for us to imagine now, but the humorous names given to such places as Misery Bay in Michigan, or Melancholy Waterhole in outback Australia actually have some very dark, and tragic stories behind them, and mostly likely refer less to the place itself, and more to events that took place there. For whatever reason however, those names have managed to persist throughout the centuries, with the stories behind them being long forgotten.

Your dinky hometown doesn't seem so bad after all, does it?
