As if Sam Smith's "Good Thing" wasn't a sad enough song, the 22-year-old crooner shockingly segued into it during a concert in Toronto this week by updating his current relationship status in front of a stunned live audience. Cue the loud gasps.

Smith, while describing the song's origin, told the crowd that "someone I've been seeing" -- a.k.a. his boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel -- would no longer be part of his life:

"This next song is a song that's very very dear to my heart. When I fell in love with the person who inspired the majority of this record, I had this fight in me to basically end it when I could've carried on and made In The Lonely Hour part two. But I decided to write this song, and the day before I wrote this song, I basically went on my phone and I deleted their number and I deleted everything. The reason why this song is very special for me today is that I've actually had to do a very similar thing today with someone I've been seeing. So bear with me with this one. ”

The "Stay With Me" singer, who notched six Grammy nominations, met Zeizel on the set of Smith's "Like I Can" music video. They only recently made their relationship public, which makes the swift breakup all the more surprising.

After Tuesday's concert, Smith continued to be emotional, posting his thoughts on Twitter and Instagram.

Had a really sad day today, so thank you Toronto for making me feel so much better x— SAM SMITH (@samsmithworld) January 21, 2015

Sometimes you just need to lay in bed with a glass of red wine and a football T shirt and listen to Joni Mitchell. It's been a sad day. Beautiful show, but sad day x A photo posted by Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) on Jan 20, 2015 at 9:30pm PST

Smith will have to recover quickly because he's performing at the Grammys on Feb. 8. He's nominated in the most categories (tied with Beyoncé and Pharrell): Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Stay With Me," Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour, and Best New Artist.
