LONDON -- So the big moment has finally arrived: Sam Smith has released his new Bond theme for Spectre, "Writing's on the Wall," and the result has been... well, a bit mixed to be honest.
To be fair, the hype surrounding any new Bond theme is so ridiculously great that you're never, ever going to make everyone happy, but Smith's attempt seems to have received a particularly strange mishmash of feedback.
Some people really like it.
Congratulations @samsmithworld #writingsonthewall is everything and more that a 'Bond' song should be!! #spectre— Charlie King (@CharlieKing85) September 25, 2015

Others are less keen.

Perhaps the most unexpected trend, though, was people comparing the new Bond theme to Michael Jackson's "Earth Song."
Is anyone else just hearing "Earth Song" by Michael Jackson? #writingsonthewall— Mike Murphy (@MikeJayM) September 25, 2015
Has anyone noticed that the new bond song #writingsonthewall is actually The Earth Song by Michael Jackson?— Jonny Borrows (@jonnyborrows) September 25, 2015
Eventually, this happened.
Bond vs Earth Song. You made us do this. Sorry Sam. #WritingsOnTheWallhttps://t.co/LmaznLwBWw— BBC Radio 1 (@BBCR1) September 25, 2015
To be fair, it does sort of work, doesn't it?
Elsewhere, people were making other comparisons.
Some people were reminded of Skyfall.
#writingsonthewall sounds like #skyfall on helium #bond #samsmith #spectre— Sizzles (@IanSizeland) September 25, 2015
Yes, brassy opening, tinkly piano, plaintive wailing. #WritingsOnTheWall is literally Skyfall.— Neil Alcock (@IncredibleSuit) September 25, 2015
While other people made less flattering connections.
#Spectre #WritingsOnTheWall is weeeeak! sounds like one of the rejected songs from frozen— Luke Brook (@lukewbrook) September 25, 2015
Just heard a #WritingsOnTheWall. Don't want to hear it again. Sounds like 2 pissed girls shouting at each other at 4am in a club.— Lee Sargent (@lee_sargent) September 25, 2015
The new Bond theme sounds like what would happen if a drunk elephant tried to do karaoke to an Adele song whilst singing like James Blunt— Lily Bailey (@LilyBaileyUK) September 25, 2015
You can always count on Twitter for some inventive reviews.
