According to the latest quarterly data from IDC, Samsung has shipped more than twice as many smartphones as Apple in Q2 2013.
In fact, with 72.4 million shipments in the period, the Korean giant shipped more smartphones than four of his biggest rivals combined. In Q2 2013, Apple has shipped 31.2 million smartphones, followed by LG, Lenovo and ZTE, with 12.1, 11.3 and 10.1 million, respectively.
In relative terms, however, both Samsung and Apple lost market share year-over-year, while their smaller competitors grew, signalling a possible shift in the market, so far mostly dominated by the Samsung-Apple duo.
Notice the absence of Huawei, which was the world's third largest smartphone maker a quarter ago. Together with Nokia, HTC and others, it accounts for 100.8 million smartphones shipped -- a 2.2% year-over-year increase.
All of this happened against the backdrop of an amazing quarter for smartphones in general, whose shipments grew to 237.9 million in Q2, a 52.3% year-over-year increase.
