In hopes of spurring more interest in its Gear VR virtual reality headset, Samsung has announced a video content app.

The app, Milk VR, will provide free, immersive, 360-degree content to users. The videos will be offered in both 2K and 4K formats and will focus on categories such sports, music and action-oriented videos.

Milk VR follows the launch of Milk Video and Milk Music, and indicates that Samsung intends to deepen its focus on building out the Milk brand.

The company's $199.99 virtual reality headset, developed in concert with Oculus Rift, was officially made available earlier this month.

In our report on that launch, we mentioned the company's upcoming VR content ecosystem; at that point, details were scarce. Even now, beyond the service's name and overall intent, Samsung continues to keep a lid on most of the details associated with the service.

At present, Samsung is calling this a "technical preview" of the Milk VR app with a limited content catalog (access details to be announced), with a full-on public roll out sometime in the new year. We've reached out to the company to find out more about its availability.
