Samsung has launched Series 5 Ultra, a new series of ultrabooks that has a 14-inch screen and an optical disc drive - a first for the extra-thin and light class of portable computers.

The larger, 14-inch model is 20.9 mm thick, has an aluminum case and comes with an optical drive, SSD or hard disk storage (up to 1 TB), HDMI and Ethernet ports and an option for a Radeon HD 7550M GPU. It weighs 1.8 kg, which makes it pretty hefty among ultrabooks, most of which weigh 1.5 kg or less.

The 13-inch, 14.9 mm thick model lacks the optical disc drive and the Radeon GPU option, which reduces its weight to just 1.4 kg. It has a maximum of 500 GB storage, and also comes with HDMI and Ethernet ports.

Both devices should be available in Korea in late December. The 14-inch model will start at $1,345, while the 13-inch one will be a tad cheaper, starting at $1,300. International release date and prices aren't available at this point.
