It's no Russian meteor, but Californians experienced a shooting star of their own on Friday night.
Residents reported seeing a flash of light over the San Francisco Bay area, with some sharing their sightings on Twitter:
Just saw meteor over San Francisco 15 minutes ago on drive home! #meteor #sanfrancisco #bayarea— Samir Ghosh (@samirghosh) February 16, 2013
I think I just saw a shooting star or some other explosion in the sky over Potrero Hill. #sf #satelite #asteroid #armaggedon— Sarah Thibault (@sarahrthibault) February 16, 2013
Just saw the biggest, brightest shooting star ever over Fremont! #sf #meteor #stars— emmlou (@oohmlou) February 16, 2013
But while the Russian meteor injured more than 1,000 people after exploding hours earlier, the fireball in California was not as noteworthy, Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, told the AP.
"Fireballs happen every single night, all around the world," he said.
YouTube user caiden915x posted a video of the shooting star, above, after spotting it while on the road: "We see a bright blue shooting star (meteor) fly across towards the Peninsula. Looked amazing in person!"
