This is the biggest thing to hit the BLT since sliced bread.

Researcher Chris Langdon and colleagues at Oregon State University have, after 15 years of development, patented a particular dulse (a form of seaweed) packed with protein, low in calories, and when fried is purported to taste exactly like bacon, Daily Mail reports.

The plant was originally developed as a quick-growing food for abalone but when fellow researcher Chuck Toombs came on the scene, the attention turned toward human consumption. So far, a cracker and salad dressing have been successful in recipe testing, but with a superfood that tastes like bacon, the sky's the limit.

Vegetarians, people who avoid pork for religious reasons and even omnivores of all types, rejoice. Your ticket to bacon-y goodness with absolutely no foreseeable downside may be just around the corner.
