Though selfie sticks are banned pretty much everywhere these days, one proved useful for a family that credits the tool with contributing to their rescue at a Massachusetts beach on Tuesday.

When Derrick Johns and his daughter Erynn, 16, of Texas were pulled into the rip tide at a Nantucket beach, they captured the entire terrifying experience on a GoPro attached to their selfie stick, ABC News reports.

In the video, Derrick and Erynn are seen struggling under the surf and all the while both held tight to the selfie stick. Soon Erynn was able to swim to the beach, while her father was pulled away thanks to help from a lifeguard and a few good samaritans.

Erynn later told ABC News that she credits the selfie stick with helping rescuers pull them to safety.
