United States Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) was nearly struck by a speeding train during a press conference on Friday -- at a conference about commuter safety, no less.

The conference, which was held on a Metro-North train platform in Milford, Conn., was meant to draw attention to an overhaul in Metro-North safety. But it ended up being a dangerous situation itself.

With his back to the tracks, Blumenthal said, "Safety, as you know, is paramount..." just as an Amtrak train sped through the station. Blumenthal and the man standing next to him then awkwardly tried to steady a visual aid that teetered as the train whizzed by.

Blumenthal also issued a press release on Friday, claiming that the Metro-North has been issued $552,000 in fines over the last decade "for safety violations and defects."

Luckily, no one was hurt.

In December, a speeding Metro-North train derailed near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx, killing four passengers and injuring 59 after the train operator supposedly dozed off.
