Serena Williams, the reigning queen of tennis and forever GOAT, broke hearts when she lost her match against Roberta Vinci during the U.S. Open semifinal Friday.

Naturally, her loss comes as a shock, considering Williams' number one ranking and her 21 previous grand slam titles. But those same stats remind us that Williams just might be the greatest athlete alive, U.S. Open win or not.

Serena, don't sweat it! You're still the best!— Christina Coleman (@ChrissyCole) September 11, 2015

Wow, what a crazy crazy entertaining match. Such a bummer for Serena but a great match between 2 world class athletes.— Alex Morgan (@alexmorgan13) September 11, 2015

Serena was just saving it for 2016, when she can get Steffi's "golden slam" and win all tournaments plus Olympic gold— Natalie Kitroeff (@Nataliekitro) September 11, 2015

This should only make us admire Serena more. It's so hard to win one major. She's done it 21 times.— Ken Tremendous (@KenTremendous) September 11, 2015

I'll call it now: Serena will clinch the record at the #AustralianOpen. She is only set back for a comeback. Trust. #USOpen— Derrick Clifton (@DerrickClifton) September 11, 2015

It hurts, but Serena was under pressure. This wasn't Aubrey's fault. Losing happens even to the greatest among us— Jai Sophrosyne (@JChiron18) September 11, 2015

Hahaha Serena just said "I think she played literally out of her mind." And she said she won't answer questions about disappointment.— roxane gay (@rgay) September 11, 2015

Serena is so salty in the press conference. Good for her.— roxane gay (@rgay) September 11, 2015

Serena Williams is the greatest player I've ever seen. That doesn't change. Sometimes, the best player doesn't win.— Mike Greenberg (@Espngreeny) September 11, 2015
