When Shelfari launched their social network for books back in October, one thing was missing: a way to share your reading list, your wish list and your top 10 on other sites. Today they're fixing that by launching a Shelfari widget with advanced customization. You can choose between javascript and Flash (for MySpace, Blogger etc), select one of three layouts and three sizes (small, large, custom), change the size of the book covers and even insert your Amazon associate ID to earn money when visitors click through and buy a book. It seems likely that most users will be bloggers placing the widget in a blog sidebar. To see the widget, your need to log in to an existing account and click the "add to blog" button next to your bookshelf.

Obviously this is a smart move for Shelfari, since it offers free promotion for the service on independent sites. Rivals include LibraryThing, which recently launched two new tools for book recommendations: BookSuggester and UnSuggester.
