Still taking pictures of yourself in the bathroom mirror? Bo-ring. Trying out your duck face with the crowds at a ballgame for background? Been there, done that.

It's time to let your sexy smart side show in your selfies. And what background could be sexier, smarter or more you than your favorite bookshelf?

Admit it: Like most of us, you love the voyeuristic thrill of browsing someone else's bookshelves, which tells you so much about them. Are they Harry Potter fans? Secret science-fiction nerds? Mystery mavens? Spot one of your favorite titles taking pride of place in the background of a photo, and you've made more of a connection than you'd ever get from just admiring their eye-liner.

In other words, shelfies are the new selfies. To help kickstart the trend, Mashable asked authors from across the writing spectrum to take a candid snapshot of themselves with their favorite single shelf of books in the background.

For the perfect shelfie, the books in the background need to be close enough that we can read the spines. (We're looking at you, Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk.)

If you'd like to join in and be featured in a future roundup, snap your shelfie with the hashtag #MashShelfie on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

Shelfie on, everyone.
