'Sherlock' Returns From the Dead in Thrilling Season 3 Trailer

Unlike Sherlock fans who have been desperately trying to decipher the secrets of Sherlock Holmes' fake death, the crime sleuth's best friend John Watson doesn't really care how Holmes orchestrated the feat -- he only wants to know why.

The crime series returns for season three on BBC One on Jan. 1 in the UK and on PBS Jan. 19 in the United States, and the above trailer teases the drama that will unfold.

An interactive version of the trailer, with exclusive content, is available on Wirewax.com.

Without a new episode since the season two finale aired almost two years ago, Sherlock devotees have been awaiting the fate of Britain's most famous detective (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and soulmate Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman).

To hold fans over until the season three premiere, BBC One is airing a mini episode on Christmas Day titled "Many Happy Returns." The network hasn't released any details about the episode, but it will serve as a prequel to the new season.

Last month, BBC One promoted the season with a social media-infused teaser that encouraged fans to use the hashtags #SherlockLives and #SherlockIsNotDead.

Also in November, the network teased season three in a tweet featuring a hearse:
