Brightcove is one of the most widely used video services for online distribution with a joint, centralized branding location that can be utilized as a web-based channel for any of its clients. So it comes as no surprise that premium cable channel Showtime is working with Brightcove to stream its videos that will be sent along to members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for the upcoming Emmy Awards.

[img src="" caption="" credit="" alt=""]Every year, content owners push their shows and films to the members of the Academy to encourage them to vote for their productions. And every year, the members of the Academy often get several hard copy DVDs in their mailbox--20+ from Showtime alone. But instead of sending out all those DVDs to members of the Academy, Showtime will be delivering its content through Brightcove. Members of the Academy will be granted access on Brightcove to shows like Weeds and Dexter, all in the name of being green.

Showtime is using Brightcove to save landfills the burden of its DVD cases and material, wrapping and packaging. While I'm 100% in support of Showtime's effort to save the planet, we all know that Showtime is really looking at the benefits of streaming online versus paying for all the tangible promotional material. Online distribution offers the most economical way in which to deliver digital content. It only makes sense. If content owners have to wear the green badge in order to adopt better mechanisms for its business practices, then I'm still all for it.
