PASADENA, Calif. -- Showtime's next comedy is taking viewers behind the scenes of the Los Angeles stand-up scene at a wild time.

The network gave a series order Tuesday to Jim Carrey-produced I'm Dying Up Here, a one-hour comedy about the city's infamous stand-up comedy scene of the 1970s.

"The series delves into the inspired and damaged psyches that are required to stand alone in front of an audience and make them laugh," a logline says.

The show stars Oscar winner Melissa Leo, Ari Graynor, and features a huge ensemble cast that includes The Office alum Clark Duke, Michael Angarano (The Knick), Andrew Santino (Mixology), RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Erik Griffin (Workaholics) and Stephen Guarino (Happy Endings).

Leo plays a comedy mentor and brassy comedy club owner "who rules over her business with an iron fist and nurtures her comedians with tough love."

The network also announced premiere dates for some of its existing shows, including Penny Dreadful (May 1) and House of Lies (April 10) and renewed comedy Shameless for a seventh season.
