A husband and wife from Liaoning, China, found themselves in a puzzling situation when they had to piece together 140,000 yuan ($21,300) worth of banknotes that were shredded by the man's 85 year-old father.

The man, identified only by the name Chen, told local television network Qianshan Evening News, that his father had sold his house in Anshan for 200,000 yuan ($30,400) last October. Chen's father then proceeded to cut up more than three quarters of the cash payment out of paranoia that his son and daughter-in-law were after his money.

Chen had wanted his father to put the money in the bank for safekeeping, but his father's unexpected reaction to the suggestion left him and his wife with having to glue together 1,080 hundred dollar banknotes. The process took the couple 17 hours of work a day, and three months to complete.

Thankfully, Chen's father left 60,000 ($9,100) yuan of the stash intact. The couple has since managed to exchange the bank notes for new notes, and deposited all 200,000 yuan in the bank so Chen's father wouldn't pull an Edward Scissorhands again.
