SINGAPORE -- The zoo has kicked off a 10-day celebration for one of its senior polar bears.

Inuka was the first polar bear born in the tropics, arriving on Boxing Day in 1990.

"At 25 years of age, Inuka is a senior bear," said the zoo. In July, during his last health check, the zoo discovered he was starting to suffer from age-related issues such as arthritis and dental problems. He'll be kept under close monitoring, it said.

For the 10 days, Inuka will be given birthday treats like iced fruit and towers of iced treats made of salmon. Here he is on Wednesday enjoying his first "birthday cake".
