If you spend so much time on your smartphone that it's practically a job, well you might be on the right track.

More than half of 18- to 29-year-olds have used a smartphone as part of their job search, according to a new study released by the Pew Research Center.

And perhaps a bit surprisingly, it's not connected to income or education. Job seekers that have a high school education or less are more likely to have filled out a job application or created a resume on their phone.

That doesn't mean it's easy. Job seekers on smartphones appear to be well ahead of companies, whose job listings are confusing and difficult to navigate on mobile devices.

Almost half of job seekers that used smartphones said they ended up looking at content that didn't display properly on their phones.

"Online proficiency has become more and more important to finding work in today’s job market, but some aspects of the digital job search are a substantial challenge for many Americans," said Aaron Smith, an associate director of research at Pew Research Center, in a press release for the study. "And in many cases, individuals who might benefit the most from being able to perform these behaviors effectively — such as those with relatively low levels of educational attainment or those who are currently not employed for pay — are the ones who find them most daunting."

Social media has also become an important part of the job search. More than one-third of those surveyed said they used social media to look for and learn about jobs as well as tell friends about jobs.

And like all these trends, the youth are leading the way, although older job seekers are catching on. About a quarter of social media users over the age of 50 have used one platform to look for or talk about jobs.
